Please know that children under the age of 18 might not be invited to be a volunteer. If the child has experienced a loss within the last year it may be more helpful for the child to register as a camper. Any child under the age of 18 who would like to volunteer should contact Katie at (865) 374-0864 or [email protected]
Please read all the options in the Position Descriptions link in the sidebar of this page. The answer to this question will help camp staff place volunteers with the appropriate group/activity. Make sure you read the requirements for each position.
If applying to be a Clinical Group Leader, please list all credentials.
We encourage our volunteers to have a clear mind when talking to children that are grieving. If you feel as though a loss that you had within the past year will inhibit your ability to help others, please apply in the future. If you have questions or would like to discuss your loss to make sure you would be a good fit for Katerpillar Kids Camp, please call (865) 374-0864 or email us at [email protected].
Camp runs from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday, and 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on Sunday. The success of our camp depends on volunteers, so please ensure you are available for the entire weekend.

Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about your new role? From time to position commitments, check out our Volunteer FAQs.

What is the time commitment?
Every volunteer must attend a volunteer training prior to camp. We also ask that volunteers are available for the entire camp (7:30 am – 6 pm) both Saturday and Sunday. Depending on your volunteer position, there may also be some light prep-time required.

Are there any requirements to volunteer?

All volunteers must complete a background check, paid for and provided by Covenant Health. We also ask all volunteers to complete the application form. While we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, some positions do require prior training. See below for an outline:

Clinical Group Leader – CGLs are responsible for leading group times when talking about death and grief. This leader will also be available for one-on-one counseling if a camper needs it. The CGL will support the Organizational Group leader with their responsibilities. Clinical training such as a social worker, therapist, chaplain, pastor, or school counselor preferred.

Organizational Group Leader –  The OGL will be responsible for making sure the campers are at the right place at the right time with all supplies needed. OGL will also be responsible for making sure that the correct campers will be on the bus or who will be arriving at camp by car. They will support the Clinical Group Leader with their responsibilities. Previous Katerpillar Kids Camp experience preferred.

Group Volunteer – The group volunteer will support both the CGL and the OGL. Their main responsibility will be to make sure the campers are doing what they need to be doing.

Panel Volunteers – These volunteers will be either in High School, College or recent College graduate age that have personally gone through a loss and would like to share their experience in a panel in front of our JR/HS groups. Panel volunteers will then be put into JR/High school group.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

We appreciate your effort in helping to make the Katerpillar Kids Camp a possibility. Without our passionate volunteers, we would not be able to hold this camp for families in need.

If you’re interested in other volunteer opportunities through the Covenant Health network, we invite you to apply.

About Katerpillar Kids Camp

Katerpillar Kids Camp is a special camp for children who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The camp is coordinated by Covenant Hospice and sponsored by Variety and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019. Many campers come to camp because they lost a parent. However, children who have lost any family member or a friend are welcome to participate.
