Hope For the Holidays

Hope for the Holidays

Hope for the Holidays is an annual party held during the winter holiday season of the year. This is an event that clients of Hope Center and their families can come and have fellowship with each other while enjoying a wonderful meal. During the party, Santa and Mrs. Claus make a special trip down from the North Pole to greet the children, young and old and to hand out gifts. While Hope Center is the primary agency involved in Hope for the Holidays, many other community agencies help to make sure this is a fantastic event. Agencies included are our host Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church and other community agencies such as Samaritan Ministries, Central Baptist Church of Bearden, Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center and Positively Living

Hope Buckets have been a tradition with Hope Center since the year 2000 thanks to Carol Ann Buchanan in honor of her brother, Chucky Moyers. These buckets are for members of the Hope Center and are given out during our Hope for the Holidays party in December. If you are a hope member and are interested in receiving a bucket, please call the office at (865) 374-0864. If you are interested in putting a Hope Bucket together please see the bottom of this page for instructions.

The Hope Bucket Story

My brother, Chucky Moyers attended his last Hope Party in 1999.  Although it was a joy filled event for the children, Chucky was disheartened by the lack of support for the adult patients.  When I discussed the idea of “The Hope Bucket” with him, he was thrilled for all of the future Hope Center patients to experience this Holiday treat.  After his death in January of 2000, I made this project my top priority, beginning with help from family and friends, then, eventually including community support which exponentially increased the number of buckets provided.  The Hope Buckets have been going strong for 15 years.  We have witnessed the incredible advancement in HIV/AIDS treatment in recent years which means more patients living actively with, and managing the disease well, rather than succumbing to AIDS in a short amount of time like Chucky did.  Just as treatment of HIV/AIDS has evolved over the years, the Hope Bucket and its contents have also adapted to the ever changing needs of the patients.  It remains a mainstay of the Hope for the Holidays Party.   The purpose of the Hope Bucket is to give a useful holiday gift to people living with HIV.  There are specific reasons for each item on the list, for example, food is not on the list, but hard candy is appropriate.  The Bucket must be a bucket with a handle, not a basket, bag or box. It sometimes becomes essential for late-stage patients. Because of nausea, Chucky carried a bucket with him everywhere the last several months of his life; thus, the idea of the bucket was born for this project.

Recognizing that you have a choice in your philanthropic efforts, I thank you very much for your continued support of this very special project in my brother’s name, “The Hope Bucket”.

My heartfelt thanks to you,
Carol Ann Buchanan
