Katerpillar Kids Camp is a free annual grief camp for children and teens in grades 1-12 who have lost someone they love. The camp is a free community service provided by Covenant Hospice and sponsored by Variety-the Children’s Charity.
Variety’s Katerpillar Kids Camp 2018 will be held at camp Wesley Woods in Townsend on September 15 and 16. In addition to the many fun outdoor activities offered by the camp, there will also be therapeutic activities such as Mane Support which is a non-riding grief therapy with horses, a Kids on the Block puppet show, group times, and special art activities designed to help them understand and cope with their grief. Other “extras” include H.A. B. I. T. (Human Animal Bond in Tennessee) and music.
The camp provides a safe and caring environment in which campers can feel comfortable sharing their grief experience. For many campers, this camp is the first time they have really spoken about the death and their feelings of grief. When they see they are not alone – that there are others their age that are experiencing similar feelings, they tend to open up, and that is the best therapy of all. Trained camp volunteer counselors provide information and guidance as they listen with open minds, hearts, and ears to each camper.
